Strawberry Festivals Forever

Summer means festival season. This weekend, the action is happening in Augusta, Ohio. The annual Strawberry Festival takes place Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11. There will be a parade at 7 p.m. on Friday. Grab a friend, bring a lawn chair, and share the sidewalks with a neighbor. The fun is about to begin!

The Augusta Strawberry festival is steeped in tradition — and necessity! Generations of local folks have been participating, organizing and donating for years. In fact, it’s the Augusta Volunteer Fire Department’s largest fundraiser.

The Augusta VFD was formed by 23 local men in 1949. The original fire station was located near the intersection of SR 9 and Andora Rd. The station even housed a pool table in the early days. Today, the station is located on Aurora Rd., just west of the village. Chief Ron Dinger and his crew continue to plan the annual strawberry festival event. Local residents donate items for the food stand, including homemade shortcakes to go with the strawberries and ice cream. You’ll also find pie a la mode, burgers, coneys, french fries, and more.

But why strawberries? Well, that’s a bit of a history lesson. There used to be acres of the big red berries growing in Augusta Township. The Knight and Manfull farms were the area’s primary strawberry suppliers. Over time, strawberry production ceased. Times are changing, though. A new generation is determined to bring back the tradition. Strawberry plants are in the ground, and in 2017, Manfull Orchards Farm Market will be once again be selling its homegrown strawberries, for the first time in 30 years.

To commemorate this year’s planting, Twigg Winery has produced a batch of Strawberry Wine — just in time for this week’s Augusta Strawberry Festival. The wine has a vibrant strawberry flavor reminiscent of cordial. The delicate, but delightful fresh-from-the-berry-patch aroma pays homage to the first fruits of the season.

Visit Carrollton, then head north! There’s a lot happening in Carroll County’s northeastern corner this weekend. Be sure to stop by the Augusta Strawberry Festival on Friday and Saturday evenings. Enjoy the food, fellowship, a tractor pull or two, and various games for kids and families. Don’t miss the parade on Friday at 7 p.m. Be sure to bring a bag for candy!

And if you’re interested in a taste of strawberry wine, stop by Twigg Winery located at 4155 Meter Rd. For hours, directions, and a bit of an Augusta history lesson, visit TwiggWinery.com.

Would It be possible for my wife to bring her stained glass as well and setup under our tent during the festival. I would also want to know the cost for the 2 day event. We would not need electric and we will bring our tables and chairs and our 10 X 10 tent. Please let me know if that is OK.
